Essential Northwest Hip-Hop: Blue Scholars

If you live outside of Seattle you may not have heard of Blue Scholars, but today they are an integral part of the city's hip-hop scene like Starbucks is to coffee, Pike Place Market is to shopping, or the Space Needle is to the skyline.

Bro Rape Guy, Troy Barnes, Childish Gambino... Donald Glover has compiled an impressive list of aliases in a short period of time. He has broken out online through his comedy group Derrick Comedy with sketches like Bro Rape: A Newsline Investigative Report; he has broken out on television with notable writing credits for shows like 30 Rock and The Daily Show, and has a lead role in NBC's Community; and now Donald is on the cusp of breaking out through his music under his rap moniker, Childish Gambino...

According to his facebook page, his influences include "everything except trance and new country" - and that's not far from the truth...

Instead the album should be called Atlantic Records presents: "Lasers", with a tiny footnote at the bottom that reads "with vocal contributions from Lupe Fiasco". Greed, politics, strong-arming, and autotune have combined to ruin what should have been a lyrical piece of art...
