DJ TOPCAT is a rare kind of mash-up artist not afraid to truly span many genres and decades. Take one look at the Seattle based DJ's collection of mp3s, and you'll see mixes involving Taylor Swift, Jay-Z, The Allman Brothers, KISS, A-ha, Ying Yang Twins, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Doors, Simon and Garfunkel, Eminem, and so on and so forth. According to his facebook page, his influences include "everything except trance and new country" - and that's not far from the truth.
Boasting a collection of over 50,000 records, DJ TOPCAT has crafted a variety of mash-ups combinations that generally always seem to just... work. His preference is to keep the vocals and background instrumentals in tact - just overlapped - giving each track a familiar feel, but yet surprising you with an element of "holy shit this works so well, why didn't I think of that?!".
What has really cemented his reputation for me are three recently released (or re-released) mash-up albums: "Whole Lotta Hova" (Jay-Z vs. Led Zeppelin, aka, Jay Zeppelin), "Eazy Cash" (Eazy E vs. Johnny Cash), and a Felt 3 (Murs & Slug) vs. Jimi Hendrix mix. Also, I can't post it due to a copyright claim by Cage the Elephant, but if you like Atmosphere grab "Back Against the Atmosphere" (Atmosphere vs. Cage the Elephant) off of his website - like Charlie Sheen that track is simply "winning".
